The European Commission’s document “Assessing the Impact of High Energy Prices on Tourism in the EU”, published in June, 2024, delves into how rising energy costs influence the tourism sector in the EU. Using the JRC-GEM-E3 model, the report reveals that while tourism isn’t highly energy-intensive, it is indirectly affected by higher energy prices. These increased costs force households to spend more on energy, leaving less disposable income for tourism. Additionally, since tourism often involves transportation, higher energy prices drive up transport costs, making tourism services more expensive. Overall, the report provides a background, methods used, and overview of results and discussion to understand these dynamics.
