The Destination 2050 roadmap, developed by the Royal Netherlands Aerospace Centre (NLR) and SEO Amsterdam Economics (SEO) for the Destination 2050 Alliance, which includes associations for airlines (A4E and ERA), airports (ACI Europe), civil aeronautics (ASD), and air navigation service providers (CANSO), outlines an ambitious decarbonisation pathway for European aviation. Published in February 2025, it details the necessary actions to achieve net zero emissions by 2050, emphasising that this goal can be reached through a combination of advancements in aircraft and engine technologies, the implementation of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), optimisation of air traffic management and aircraft operations, and economic measures. The report indicates that SAF and advancements in aircraft and engine technology will contribute to 83% of the emissions reductions by 2050.
