The European Federation for Transport and Environment AISBL's December 2024 report explores the potential for battery recycling in Europe. The report highlights that battery recycling is a crucial opportunity for Europe to achieve resource sufficiency and a low-impact supply chain. By 2030, end-of-life batteries and scrap from European battery gigafactories could supply 14% of lithium, 16% of nickel, 17% of manganese, and 25% of cobalt demand. These materials could be sufficient to produce between 1.3 and 2.4 million EVs locally in 2030, up to 10 million in 2035, and up to 15 million by 2040. The study offers a detailed analysis of recycling feedstock in Europe, its impacts, future availability and capacities, and policy recommendations to promote a circular economy in the EV sector.
