The European Parliament and Council of the European Union approved Directive 2000/60/EC in October 2000, which provides a framework for Community action related to water policy. It lays out guidelines for achieving "good status" for Europe's rivers, lakes, and groundwater by 2015 and stopping the decline of EU water bodies. In addition to restoring ecosystems in and around these bodies of water, the directive seeks to safeguard freshwater resources and promote sustainable management of all types of water, including surface, ground, inland, and transitional bodies.
