The European Commission has launched the Competitiveness Compass, a strategic framework designed to embed competitiveness into every euro invested and initiative proposed within the EU. The Compass seeks to uphold Europe’s economic model while fostering innovation, sustainable growth, and global leadership.

Executive Vice-President Stéphane Séjourné emphasised the significance of this approach, stating:
The idea is to put competitiveness at the heart of every euro we invest. In every initiative we propose, in full respect of our European model.

The Competitiveness Compass identifies three core priorities for the EU’s long-term strategy:

  1. Closing the innovation gap – the EU will advance AI, quantum technology, biotechnology, robotics, and clean energy while launching AI gigafactories and an EU start-up strategy to streamline regulations and scale European businesses.
  2. Decarbonisation and industrial competitiveness – the Clean Industry Programme will support industries in transitioning to low-carbon processes, accelerating green investments and simplifying permitting procedures for sustainable manufacturing.
  3. Reducing dependencies and strengthening supply chains – the EU aims to secure access to raw materials, clean energy, and key technologies through global partnerships while reforming public procurement to prioritise European sources.

To ensure long-term prosperity, the Competitiveness Compass also focuses on:

  • aligning investments with strategic goals to enhance economic resilience;
  • fostering innovation by supporting R&D and emerging technologies;
  • enhancing regulatory frameworks to simplify business operations;
  • developing financial instruments to boost competitiveness funding;
  • promoting skills and quality jobs to equip the workforce for future industries.

The Competitiveness Compass represents the EU’s commitment to industrial leadership and sustainable economic growth, ensuring a competitive, resilient, and innovative future.
