Humana Fundación Pueblo para Pueblo is proud to announce an Open Day at its textile sorting center on 5 June 2025, as part of the official EU Green Week partner event program. The open day invites the public to discover firsthand how used textiles are given a second life and how circular economy principles are being put into practice.
Located in Leganés, near Madrid, the facility is one of the largest textile waste management centers in Spain, with more than 10,000 m² of operational space. Operations were launched in 2010, and the facility was expanded in 2018. Today, it processes up to 40 tonnes of textile waste daily, thanks to a dedicated team of over 100 staff. Visitors will have the opportunity to join guided tours throughout the morning of June 5th, gaining insight into the behind-the-scenes work that supports sustainable fashion and textile reuse. Registration is required to attend.
This year’s EU Green Week explores the theme of “Clean, Competitive & Circular”, underscoring the pivotal role of circularity in Europe’s green transition. With 2025 marking a major milestone—mandatory separate collection of textile waste now in force across EU member states and a revised Waste Framework Directive introducing Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for textiles—this Open Day offers timely insights into the future of sustainable textile management.
“Sorting centers like ours are key to ensuring that used textiles are reintegrated into the economy at the highest possible value,” says Rafael Mas, Head of Institutional Relations and Projects from Humana Spain. “This helps reduce waste, conserve resources, and supports local employment while contributing to a cleaner, more circular Europe.”
Organised by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Environment, EU Green Week is Europe’s premier environmental policy event. Celebrating its 25th edition, the initiative continues to bring together decision-makers, businesses, NGOs, and citizens to spotlight innovative solutions for a more sustainable future.
