On 16 April, UNESCO designated 16 new Global Geoparks, bringing the total number of sites in the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network to 229 across 50 countries. These geoparks are acknowledged for their internationally significant geological heritage and their contributions to sustainable tourism, education, and local development. This year’s newly designated sites are spread across four continents and include, for the first time, areas in Saudi Arabia and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.
