As a leading international wholesale specialist with operations in 34 countries, we understand that to balance the demand of an ever-growing population with the limits of planetary resources, we need to build a more sustainable food industry and join forces in order to do so in an even more impactful way.
Commitments by aspirational objectives:
Aspirational objective 1: Healthy, balanced, and sustainable diets for all European consumers, thereby contributing to:
1) Reversing malnutrition and diet-related noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) in the EU;
2) Reducing the environmental footprint of food consumption by 2030.
With the following aspirational targets:
a) Improved food consumption patterns in the EU;
b) A food environment that makes it easier to choose healthy and sustainable diets.
Metro commitments:
Reformulation: Within our brand range, we revise applicable products for reformulation to reduce fat, salt, and sugar content and/or eliminate additives.
Aspirational objective 2: Prevention and reduction of food loss and waste (at the consumer level, within internal operations, and across value chains)
With the following aspirational target:
A 50% reduction of per capita food waste at the retail and consumer level by 2030 and reduced food losses along the food production and supply chains in the EU.
Metro commitments:
In 2016, METRO AG committed to the Consumer Goods Forum Resolution on Food Waste to reduce food waste by 50% on own
operations by 2025.
Aspirational objective 3: A climate-neutral food chain in Europe by 2050
With the following aspirational target:
Reducing net emissions from own operations, contributing to a 55% GHG emission reduction target in the EU food chain by 2030 (following a science-based approach).
Metro commitments:
Climate neutrality in our operations by 2040 METRO has decided
to go one step beyond our existing climate target for 2030 and strives towards climate neutrality in our global business operations by 2040. This ambitious target entails an extensive set of measures supported by heavy investments in technology and innovation, which mainly encompasses zero emission stores for new store buildings, energy-saving measures as well as phasing out fluor gases in cooling and fossil heating, and increasing the use of photovoltaic systems and electrification of the company’s car fleet.
Aspirational objective 7: Sustainable sourcing in food supply chains
With the following aspirational targets:
a) Transformed commodity supply chains that do not contribute to deforestation, forest degradation, and destruction of natural habitat and which preserve and protect high-value ecosystems and biodiversity;
b) Improved social performance in (global) food supply chains.
Metro commitments:
Sustainable Supply Chains: METRO is working towards more sustainable supply chains. We have strong policies and efficient action plans in place to transform our brand range, especially in the fields of fish & seafood, palm oil and soy.
