CURRENT ACTIONS:
Collaboration is at the heart of ETC’s strategy for the sustainable development of European tourism. We have made and maintained several close working relationships with other tourism groups and stakeholders committed to pursuing climate action.
ETC has already worked on numerous initiatives to celebrate sustainable travel and digitalisation in tourism. We have previously worked on the Rail Tourism Awards and Destination of Sustainable Cultural Tourism, both of which celebrate excellent efforts to promote sustainable or digital travel products. By providing awards for smart and sustainable products, we are encouraging the dissemination of these practices and ideals within the sector.

We were also instrumental in the development of the European Commission’s upcoming Data Space for Tourism, working alongside ForwardKeys, Modul University Vienna and City Destinations Alliance. We look forward to seeing how this platform will enable all sector stakeholder groups (e.g., SMEs, governmental agencies, technology firms, and tourism entities at the national, regional, and local scales of operation) to share and access the data they require when they need it.

FUTURE ACTIONS:
We will continue to foster long-term partnerships within the Glasgow Declaration Community and One Planet Network, sharing insights, best practices, and challenges on the path towards decarbonisation. We will also encourage our members to collaborate on building a sustainable tourism ecosystem in Europe by creating forums for the sharing of knowledge and ideas, hosting dedicated workshops on climate-related topics, and creating an online platform to facilitate collaboration. All the while, ETC will release publications on topics related to sustainable tourism which destinations can use to build their strategies for sustainable destination management.

ETC will continue to work on the current phase of the Data Space for Tourism, providing strategic guidance and promoting the Data Space for the remainder of this phase of the project.

ETC is dedicated to continuing our work in encouraging the production of smart and sustainable tourism services and approaches within the industry. We hope to collaborate on more projects like these in the future.

OUTPUT:
Foster new relationships with tourism groups and stakeholders pursuing climate action.
Publish research on sustainable tourism-related topics.
Continue to work on the Rail Tourism Awards and Destination for Sustainable Cultural Tourism Awards.

TIME:
Establishing partnerships for sustainable development is an ongoing mission of ETC, that will continue in the coming years.

Since 2024, ETC has increased its use of more sustainable, qualitative KPIs in research and has begun delving further into travellers’ attitudes to sustainable behaviour. More sustainability-focused resources will be released in the coming years.

The 4th edition of the Rail Tourism Awards and 7th Destination for Sustainable Cultural Tourism Awards will take place in 2024, further editions will continue at least until 2030.
