PRIMA logo

PRIMA Programme is an ambitious joint programme based on the Euro-Mediterranean cooperation framework. It consists of European Union Member States, Horizon 2020 Associated Countries and Mediterranean Partner Countries on an equal footing basis (co-ownership, co-management and co-funding) with the Participation of the European Commission, under the framework of an art.185 TFEU. Currently, 19 countries are committed to the initiative. Algeria, Croatia, Cyprus, Egypt, France, Germany, Greece, Israel, Italy, Jordan, Lebanon, Luxembourg, Malta, Morocco, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, Tunisia and Turkey have formally become PRIMA Participating States.

The mission of the PRIMA initiative relies on achieving, supporting, and promoting integration, alignment, and joint implementation of national R&I programmes under a common research and innovation strategy to address the diverse challenges in water scarcity, agriculture, and food security.
For this purpose, the thematic areas of the PRIMA Programme are:

  • Integrated and sustainable management of water for arid and semi-arid Mediterranean areas

  • Sustainable farming systems under Mediterranean environmental constraints

  • Sustainable Mediterranean agro-food value chain for regional and local development.

     

What are the amounts funded? 

From 2017 to 2031, the EU contributed €325 million to PRIMA, with an additional €384 million from participating states. The relevant budget is allocated in the form of grants as follows:

  • Water management in Nexus: EUR 10.9 million

  • Farming systems in Nexus: EUR 10.8 million

  • Agri-food value chain in Nexus: EUR 10.8 million

  • PRIMA Woman Greening Food Systems Award in the Mediterranean Region: two awards of EUR 10,000 each (20,000 euro in total)

  • Multi-topics: EUR 36 million

 

PRIMA is co-financed by the EU (Horizon 2020 & Horizon Europe) and participating states:

  • EU Member States: Croatia, Cyprus, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain. 

  • Mediterranean Partner Countries: Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Tunisia, Turkey.

The funding is managed by the European Commission, with contributions from participating states.
