The Blue4Green project, funded by the European Urban Initiative, aims to enhance climate resilience in Bruges by developing a smart, sustainable water management system that supports the city’s greening policy and addresses water scarcity, quality, and flooding risks. Coordinated by the City of Bruges, it focuses on three key solutions: a digital twin for real-time water and green infrastructure monitoring, an automated steering system for the city’s canal network (reien), and the testing of nature-based solutions. Running from December 2024 to May 2028, its expected outcomes include increased water buffer capacity, improved water quality for recreational and ecological use, and enhanced protection of green infrastructure and residents from climate-related water stress.
