The Torne Valley Dipnet Culture project, part of the Interreg Aurora program, is dedicated to preserving the centuries-old tradition of dipnet fishing in the Torne Valley, a practice integral to the cultural identity of local communities in Finland and Sweden. It is taking place from August, 2024, to December, 2026. The project aims to safeguard this living heritage for future generations and promote it as a unique cultural specialty both locally and globally. Key objectives include ensuring the continuation and recognition of dipnet fishing traditions, nominating this tradition for UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage list, and supporting social, ecological, and economic sustainability in the region.
