The T-REX Project aims to establish a harmonized EU blueprint and business opportunities for closed-loop sorting, and recycling of household textile waste. It seeks to transform discarded textiles from waste products into valuable raw materials and commodities, enabling new scalable business models. This initiative aligns with forthcoming regulations mandating separate household textile waste collection and Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) requirements, among other policies. The project is scheduled to conclude on May 31, 2025.

The T-REX Project aims to create a circular system for post-consumer textile waste by uniting 13 key players from the entire value chain. The initiative focuses on developing a harmonised EU blueprint for closed-loop sorting and recycling of household textiles, transforming waste into valuable feedstock for scalable business models. Currently, only 2% of post-consumer textiles in Europe are recycled into fibres, facing challenges such as inconsistent standards, inaccurate material claims, and unreliable data.

The project includes collaboration between waste management leaders like Veolia and textile recycling innovators such as Infinited Fiber Company and BASF. These partnerships will facilitate the conversion of recycled fibres into yarn, which brands like adidas will use to create sustainable products. Additionally, the project emphasises citizen engagement and data analysis to enhance awareness and sustainability practices in textile recycling. Funded by the EU's Horizon Europe programme, the T-REX Project seeks to pave the way for a more sustainable textile industry.
