The Barcelona City Council provides tourist organisations in the city with the opportunity to obtain a voluntary certificate known as the Commitment to Sustainable Tourism Barcelona Biosphere (El Compromís per a la Sostenibilitat Turística Barcelona Biosphere). This certificate is awarded to organisations dedicated to responsible and environmentally-friendly management, cultural promotion, decent working conditions, gender equity, and social and economic benefits. The programme aligns with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations' 2030 Agenda, offering guidance and training to help participants develop and implement annual action plans aimed at continuous sustainability improvements to meet the standard's criteria. By joining the programme, participants can position themselves in an emerging market, attract environmentally conscious customers, build connections with other sustainable organisations, and contribute to a more eco-friendly tourism sector. The cost of joining the programme is determined by the Barcelona City Council and can be obtained by contacting the authority.
