The European Commission adopted a new strategic framework titled the Strategy for a Competitive and Sustainable EU Bioeconomy, positioning bioeconomy as a key pillar for Europe’s industrial competitiveness and circular, regenerative growth.
The Strategy promotes the use of secondary biomass agricultural residues, by-products and organic waste to develop bio-based materials and products, including plastics, chemicals, construction materials, textiles, fertilisers and bio-manufactured goods. This approach aims to reduce dependency on fossil imports, support rural economies, create green jobs, and drive circular value-chains from farm to factory. The plan also includes measures to mobilise public and private investments, streamline regulation, and make bio-based innovations commercially viable at scale.
Under the new framework, circularity and sustainability are no longer niche add-ons but core enablers of competitiveness. The Commission emphasises that the EU bioeconomy must be ‘bio-based, circular, regenerative and fair,’ signalling a shift towards high-value applications and resource efficient production systems across member states.
