A recent episode of the Smart Textiles, Smarter World podcast highlighted the development of an innovative protective textile designed to improve the safety of police officers facing Molotov cocktail attacks. Recorded at Techtextil 2026, the episode features a conversation between Judith Bosch, Smart & Technical Textiles Senior Manager, and Yvette Dietzel, Head of Research at the Saxon Textile Research Institute (STFI), who discussed how research and industry collaboration led to the creation of a lightweight, flame-resistant protective garment manufactured entirely in Europe.

During the discussion, Dietzel explained that the project brought together several SMEs and industry partners to develop the garment, combining advanced fibre compositions, specialised spinning and weaving technologies, and extensive burn testing. The resulting fabric was engineered to provide high levels of protection while remaining lightweight and comfortable for the wearer. Testing included simulated Molotov cocktail scenarios using different fuel mixtures, with the garment demonstrating rapid self-extinguishing performance after exposure to flames. The speakers also highlighted the importance of European manufacturing, collaborative research, and practical testing in translating textile innovation into solutions that address real-world safety challenges for emergency services.

The podcast shows how collaborative research can accelerate the development of advanced protective textiles while strengthening Europe’s technical textile capabilities and manufacturing expertise.
