As European tourism shifts towards smarter, more sustainable, and resilient models, Finland is leading in a key area: data management. The recognition of Visit Finland’s DataHub as a European “good practice” by the Interreg Europe program marks a significant achievement—not only for Finland but for the wider European tourism sector.
The DataHub tackles a longstanding issue in tourism: fragmented information. Tourism products, services, and experiences are often spread across multiple platforms, outdated, or duplicated—causing inefficiencies, missed opportunities, and inconsistent communication. Finland’s solution has been to centralise this information in a single, open-access database, enabling tourism businesses to manage and share their content easily.

Currently, the platform hosts thousands of tourism offerings and is widely used by businesses, destinations, and digital platforms. Through open interfaces, this data can be automatically shared across websites, booking systems, apps, and marketing channels, ensuring consistency, reducing manual effort, and greatly enhancing the quality and reach of tourism information.
What makes the DataHub especially relevant in Europe is its role as a support system rather than just a tool. It helps tourism stakeholders—particularly SMEs—to increase visibility without extra costs or technical hurdles. By streamlining data sharing and content distribution, it enables smaller players to engage more actively in international markets, boosting the overall competitiveness of the destination.
At the same time, the DataHub aligns well with EU priorities. It advances the digital transition by providing a shared infrastructure for data exchange and supports sustainability objectives. For instance, it enables destinations to promote certified sustainable products and make inclusive, accessible tourism options easier to find.

Beyond improving efficiency, the platform also facilitates strategic decision-making. With structured, current data accessible across the ecosystem, destinations can better plan marketing efforts, develop new products, and adapt to shifting demand. This move toward knowledge-driven tourism management is increasingly viewed as vital for building resilience in a rapidly changing global travel environment.

The European recognition of the DataHub signals a broader shift: tourism is evolving from mere promotion to the intelligent, collaborative, and large-scale management of information. Finland’s strategy illustrates how national coordination, open data, and stakeholder involvement can create a system that benefits the entire tourism value chain.

For European destinations, the message is clear. Investing in shared data infrastructure is not just a technical upgrade but a strategic move that can foster innovation, enhance sustainability, and improve competitiveness across regions. As initiatives like the DataHub become more visible, they serve as practical models for how tourism in Europe can develop—more connected, more efficient, and ultimately more impactful.
