In September 2025, the Driving Urban Transitions (DUT) Partnership announced the launch of its annual funding initiative, the DUT Call 2025, designed to support projects that advance climate-neutral and resilient urban environments worldwide. With participation from 25 countries, this collaboration seeks to address transformative urban solutions through innovative research.
Approximately €44 million is allocated to projects within three thematic Transition Pathways: the 15-minute City, Circular Urban Economies, and Positive Energy Districts. Eligible applicants—including research organizations, urban authorities, businesses, and cultural sectors—are encouraged to propose 3-year projects focused on urban areas with strategic, applied, or innovation angles.
Of particular relevance to the tourism industry is the emphasis on the 15-minute City and Circular Urban Economies thematic pathways. Within the 15-minute City concept, projects are invited to explore next steps for multimodal urban mobility, building on the travel experience. By enhancing the connectivity and accessibility of urban areas through multimodal transport solutions, the initiative aims to improve both the convenience and enjoyment of travel for tourists, fostering more sustainable and attractive tourism experiences.
Moreover, under the Circular Urban Economies pathway, the DUT Call 2025 highlights the potential of sustainable tourism to act as a catalyst for circular benefits within urban settings. Projects are encouraged to develop innovative practices that integrate tourism with resilient green infrastructure and urban greening, transforming cities into vibrant, ecological destinations. This approach not only enhances the sustainability of tourism activities but also supports local economies by promoting green job creation and environmentally friendly practices.
Additionally, projects in Positive Energy Districts are encouraged to integrate tourism within local economies and energy markets, ensuring a positive socio-economic impact.
The collaboration among 25 participating countries provides a platform for stakeholders from various sectors—ranging from research organizations and urban authorities to businesses and the cultural sector—to propose innovative projects that align with these goals.
By participating in the DUT Call 2025, tourism stakeholders have a unique opportunity to contribute to shaping future urban spaces that prioritize both environmental sustainability and enriching travel experiences, ensuring the global competitiveness of tourism destinations in a climate-neutral world.
Applications for pre-proposals are open from September 1 to November 17, 2025. Prospective participants can utilize the DUT matchmaking platform to network and find partners for their projects.
