In early 2025, the Directorate-General for Migration and Home Affairs of the European Commission published two studies examining the standardisation of access to information on cross-border travel by road, rail, and maritime transport. Unlike air travel, these modes currently lack EU-wide data processing regulations, which creates operational limitations for law enforcement in tackling cross-border crime and terrorism. The studies evaluate potential policy options at the EU level, including approaches that do not rely on data from transport operators. The objective is to enhance law enforcement capabilities by improving access to travel-related information.
