The new white paper titled “Overtourism in Milan: The Perception of Tourism Pressure Among Residents” is the result of research carried out by the Data Appeal Company together with Doxa. It is the first scientific investigation into how tourism intensity in Milan impacts the daily lives of residents, offering both qualitative and quantitative perspectives. Milan has been highlighted internationally for its high tourist-to-resident ratio, and this report explores what that means for the city’s communities.

The analysis shows that perceptions vary widely across districts. Some areas struggle with rising costs of living and overcrowding, while others manage to strike a balance between welcoming visitors and maintaining a high quality of life. According to the findings, a majority of residents believe their quality of life has declined. At the same time, specific neighbourhoods demonstrate that tourism can bring benefits when carefully managed.

This publication is especially relevant for destination managers, urban planners, policymakers and researchers who seek to understand and address the challenges of overtourism. It transforms data and local perspectives into practical knowledge, helping to shape more sustainable tourism policies.

We recommend downloading and reading the full white paper, which is available free of charge and offers important insights for the future of urban tourism in Milan and beyond. Download it here.
