Europe is witnessing an extraordinary surge in travel sentiment for the spring and summer of 2026, with intentions to travel reaching an all-time high since 2020 at 82%. This sentiment peaks during May, June, and July, as travelers plan to embrace the vast beauty and diverse cultures of the continent. The underpinning motivation behind this enthusiasm is leisure travel, with an impressive 77% prioritizing relaxation and exploration over business endeavors, which have dropped to a humble 4%.
Intra-European journeys dominate the travel landscape at 65%, reflecting a preference for local exploration, while interest in non-neighboring destinations mounts to 32%. Sun & Beach holidays remain the most coveted choice at 28%, with City Breaks and Culture & Heritage trips following closely at 16% each. An intriguing shift towards less crowded locales is marked by a 41% rise, yet the allure of off-the-beaten-path spots holds steady at 10%.
As vacation durations adapt to suit the modern traveler, shorter getaways of 4 to 6 nights are increasingly favored by 38% of Europeans, encouraging budget adjustments towards modest levels. Despite escalating oil prices, car travel has seen an uptick to 28%, while air travel holds steady at 55%, underscoring the diverse travel modes chosen this season.
Spain, Italy, and France take the spotlight as the top destinations within Europe, attracting significant interest from wanderers. The Southern/Mediterranean region is likewise experiencing a resurgence, with a 17% surge in holiday interest. Concerns about rising travel costs (20%) and potential geopolitical tensions in the Middle East (18%) persist, yet they are met by a proactive readiness to adapt travel plans in response to climate-related disruptions by approximately two-thirds of respondents.
