On 18th March 2026, the Transport and Tourism Committee of the European Parliament outlined a visionary strategy to transform the EU's tourism landscape as part of its upcoming sustainable tourism strategy. With a staggering 80% of travellers concentrated in only 10% of global destinations, MEPs are urging a shift towards emerging and remote areas such as rural heartlands and mountain regions. This plan not only seeks to alleviate the pressures of overtourism but also to capitalize on local gastronomy, heritage, and regenerative tourism experiences that extend travel beyond peak seasons.
Key measures proposed include enhancing transport connections by reinforcing air, sea, and land links to lesser-known areas, promoting electric vehicle leasing, and implementing seamless transport ticketing across borders. The initiative also introduces new EU rules on short-term rentals, aiming to preserve authenticity and mitigate housing issues caused by over-commercialization.
MEPs highlight the importance of an eco-tourism tax already adopted by several cities and regions as a valuable funding source for local environmental projects. They also propose tourism skill cards to address labour shortages and catalyze volunteering opportunities essential for safeguarding Europe's cultural heritage.
These proposals mark a significant expansion of the EU’s sustainable tourism strategy, integrating balanced visitor flows, cultural enhancement, and community welfare as essential components. The resolution is set to be voted on by the European Parliament during the April session, a critical step to solidifying the strategy's role in promoting a sustainable tourism future across Europe.
This decisive action by MEPs is not only crucial for the economic rejuvenation of lesser-known destinations but also pivotal in maintaining the EU’s position as a leader in global tourism. With approximately 12.3 million people working in this sector, contributing 10.5% to the EU's GDP, these strategies will likely play a significant role in shaping the future of tourism in Europe.
