In a landmark announcement at the European Tourism Forum, Wonderful Copenhagen has launched DestinationPay, a transformative global tourism model designed to encourage cities worldwide to adopt Copenhagen's successful CopenPay approach. Building on the award-winning CopenPay framework, DestinationPay aims to incentivize tourists for engaging in positive actions that benefit local communities, such as cleaning up canals or arriving at museums by bike, offering cultural rewards in return.
The initiative is spearheaded by Søren Tegen Petersen, CEO of Wonderful Copenhagen, who highlighted the modern traveler’s desire for immersive, impactful experiences. DestinationPay extends this opportunity globally, allowing each destination to create meaningful value and contribute to a better global tourism experience.
Cities such as Berlin are paving the way with BerlinPay, while Normandy, inspired by the CopenPay model, expands its Low-Carbon Rate initiative promoting sustainable transport. DestinationPay, therefore, represents a shift from travel's consumption economy to an experience economy, where a trip's value is measured by its contribution rather than spending.
To facilitate the global adoption of DestinationPay, Wonderful Copenhagen will host a free online webinar in February, sharing insights and tools garnered over two years of successful implementation. This initiative reflects a pressing need for new approaches, with global tourism expected to reach 1.8 billion arrivals by 2030. EU Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, praised the initiative as it aligns with the vision of innovation and sustainability shaping future tourism.
By encouraging collective efforts, DestinationPay positions itself as a powerful model for sustainable tourism, offering cities around the world the means to foster and reward positive tourist behavior actively.
