Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC) – EMOTUR Lab is an academic and research institution committed to upskilling and reskilling the tourism sector for the digital transition, in line with the Tourism Transition Pathway and within the Spain Living Lab / Canarias Living Lab framework. The institution delivers practice-oriented training in artificial intelligence, neurotourism and digital skills for students, researchers and tourism professionals, building on training activities that reached 419 beneficiaries in 2025. Between 2026 and 2028, ULPGC–EMOTUR Lab will expand its training programmes, develop digital learning content and applied case studies, and coordinate a large-scale Living Lab network linking academia and tourism businesses. These actions aim to strengthen digital skills, foster innovation uptake and reinforce collaboration across European tourism ecosystems.

Upskilling and Reskilling for the Digital Transition of Tourism of the Canary Islands

Within the framework of the Spain Living Lab / Canarias Living Lab initiative, and in direct alignment with the Tourism Transition Pathway priority on skills, upskilling and reskilling for the digital transition, Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria – EMOTUR Lab commits to:


1. Delivering advanced AI, neurotourism  and digital skills training for tourism
We commit to delivering a structured and practice-oriented training programme on neurotourism, digital skills and artificial Intelligence applied to tourism, targeting students, researchers, tourism professionals, managers and technical staff.
Building on eight training sessions delivered in 2025, with 419 beneficiaries formally trained,
We commit to delivering at least six additional training programmes between 2026 and 2027. Training will focus on practical applications in destination management, tourism marketing, experience design, visitor intelligence and evidence-based decision-making.


2. Developing and disseminating digital learning content and applied case studies
We commit to developing digital didactic materials and applied case studies derived from real experimentation within the Spain Living Lab, Canarias Living Lab and Gastrotour projects.
A minimum of eight digital learning units will be published by 2026,
Topics will include: AI for visitor intelligence and behaviour analysis, Immersive technologies (VR/AR/XR), Intelligent agents and conversational AI, Neurotourism and emotion-based analytics, Metaverse and virtual tourism applications.


3. Establishing a large-scale Living Lab network for skills development
We commit to developing and coordinating a network of at least 450 Living Labs embedded in tourism companies (travel agencies, hospitality firms and tourism service providers) for training, experimentation and applied research, supported by:
A complementary network of at least 10 academic Living Labs, acting as knowledge hubs, providing scientific support, methodologies, data analysis, ethical frameworks and training content to the business labs. This dual structure will ensure continuous skills development, real-world testing and rapid transfer of innovation into tourism practice.


4. Strengthening collaboration across academia, industry and innovation ecosystems
We commit to reinforcing cooperation between universities, tourism enterprises, destinations, DMOs and innovation networks to scale digital skills development.
At least three joint national or international training collaborations per year (2026–2028), focused on AI, neurotourism, immersive technologies and living lab methodologies.
