A remote reservoir in Cyprus's Tillyria region will be restored and turned into a testing ground for collecting water from humidity and fog, alongside a nature-based wastewater recycling system. The project, part of the EU-funded WATERISE programme, pairs climate-resilient water management with low-impact tourism infrastructure.

Lake Pachyammos, a little-used reservoir on Cyprus's northwestern coast, will be cleaned and restored under the Interreg Euro-MED WATERISE project, with its banks and water systems repaired to improve environmental function. Around the lake, an artificial wetland will use aquatic plants to treat and recycle water, while a separate low-energy pilot system will attempt to collect water directly from ambient humidity and fog. Tillyria has been designated Cyprus's first official "green area," with Pachyammos positioned as its testing ground, and plans also include tree planting, habitat restoration, a nature trail, a viewing point and a "Water House" environmental education centre open to residents, students and visitors.

The Nicosia Region Tourism Board is coordinating the Cyprus pilot as one of ten partners from Cyprus, Greece, Italy, Spain, France and Malta working under WATERISE, with up to €300,000 in EU funding secured and over €70,000 in additional co-financing planned by the board. Board president Theodoros Krigou described the ambition as making the lake a reference point for climate resilience and green innovation in the Mediterranean, though whether the site delivers meaningful amounts of usable water, and whether it is properly maintained once EU funding ends, remains to be seen.
