The Nordic Nature & Health Hub is advancing research and practical solutions in regenerative nature tourism, a travel approach that prioritises ecological restoration, community wellbeing and visitor health. Based at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), the initiative examines how tourism activities can regenerate natural systems while enhancing human wellbeing. This work supports European tourism efforts to integrate sustainability, nature-based experiences and proactive environmental stewardship into destination development.

The Nordic Nature & Health Hub at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) is pioneering regenerative nature tourism, a progressive approach that goes beyond traditional sustainable tourism to actively restore ecosystems while promoting health, well-being, and meaningful visitor experiences. Building on interdisciplinary research, the hub brings together scientists, practitioners, businesses and regional stakeholders to explore how tourism can generate positive ecological and social outcomes.

Regenerative nature tourism as promoted by the hub emphasises mutual benefits for nature and people. Rather than simply reducing negative impacts, this approach aims to enhance biodiversity, improve habitat quality and support the resilience of landscapes that attract visitors. By designing experiences that connect tourists with natural processes and local communities, destinations can foster deeper appreciation for ecosystems while contributing to conservation goals.

At the core of the Nordic Nature & Health Hub’s work is the belief that nature tourism can be a force for restoration, learning and personal wellbeing. Research projects investigate how immersive experiences in forests, mountains, wetlands and coastlines can improve mental health, reduce stress and encourage sustainable lifestyle choices. These insights are important for a tourism industry increasingly responding to demand for wellness and slow travel experiences that prioritise authenticity and connection.

For European tourism, regenerative nature tourism aligns with several priorities, including climate adaptation, biodiversity conservation and community-based development. Destinations that integrate regenerative principles into planning and management can differentiate themselves in a competitive market by offering high-value, low-impact experiences that appeal to conscious travellers. This shift supports strategic goals such as distributing travel demand throughout the year, reducing overtourism pressures on crowded sites, and linking visitor activity to long-term ecological benefits.

The hub facilitates collaboration across sectors by hosting workshops, pilot projects and co-creative processes that engage local actors in shaping tourism offers rooted in landscape regeneration. By combining scientific research with practical tools, the initiative helps regions identify opportunities to expand nature-based tourism while strengthening ecological functions and enhancing local livelihoods.

Regenerative nature tourism represents a forward-looking approach that reimagines the role of travel in societal wellbeing and environmental stewardship. As Europe’s tourism industry embraces sustainability as both a mission and a market expectation, projects like the Nordic Nature & Health Hub offer valuable frameworks for destinations seeking to build healthier, more resilient and more ecologically integrated tourism pathways.
