The photo presents a scenic alpine landscape with snow-covered mountains, lush green meadows, a mountain lake, and scattered traditional buildings, suggesting hiking, nature tourism, and rural mountain destinations.

In Sauris in Friuli, an Italian Alpine village, local housing has been turned into accommodation run as a single scattered hotel. The model has since been copied in several other villages in Italy and the Western Balkans.

The solution links broad community engagement with online tools to present the village as a hospitable place built on its housing and local produce. The cooperative Albergo Diffuso Scarl represents about 45% of the local entrepreneurial network, and participation in EU territorial cooperation projects with Slovenia, Croatia and Greece strengthened the model and helped equip the houses with ICT such as wi-fi.

The model is considered highly transferable and has been replicated in villages in Italy, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and Albania. It also helps to build a business case for investment in regenerating local housing, so it can keep traditional buildings in use and bring income to villages with a shrinking population.
