The main transition period for the EU's ban on bisphenol A (BPA) in food contact materials ended on 20 July 2026. Most single-use and reusable food packaging and equipment manufactured with BPA can no longer be placed on the EU market, though longer deadlines and limited stock clearance apply to specific product categories.

Adopted by the European Commission in December 2024, the ban prohibits BPA in food contact materials with a few narrow exceptions, following an 18-month transition period for manufacturers to reformulate. Products already on the market before the deadline can still be filled and sold for a further 12 to 24 months depending on the category, with longer timelines for technically harder applications such as certain metal coatings and professional food processing equipment, extending to January 2028-2029.
