The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has opened a new call for expressions of interest for small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) working on novel foods, running until 18 November 2026 (13:00 CET). The initiative gives eligible SMEs access to a dedicated tele-meeting with EFSA on the requirements for novel food authorisation in the EU.

Through this call, EFSA aims to raise awareness of its General Pre-Submission Advice (GPSA) service and make it easier for SMEs to access it. While GPSA can be requested at any time before submitting an application, this call specifically focuses on two stages that may be particularly relevant for SMEs with limited or no experience: the early development stage, even before starting the studies that will be part of the application, and the final preparation stage, when most of the information for the dossier is already available.

The call is open to all SMEs active in the novel foods sector, and third parties such as consultants or industry associations may submit an expression of interest on their behalf. All information submitted, including during the advice meetings, is treated as confidential. EFSA will only publish a summary of the advice, and only if and when the related application is declared valid, alongside the non confidential version of the dossier. SMEs that took part in previous editions are also welcome to apply again, as long as their new request concerns a different novel food. Interested businesses can submit their expression of interest through the form provided by EFSA before the deadline.
