The European Commission has published its 2027 programme of food and veterinary audits, planning 144 audits and 8 fact-finding visits across food and feed safety, animal health and welfare, plant health and import controls. The programme increases audits of third countries exporting to the EU by 50% and border control post inspections by 33%, compared to 2025, in line with Commissioner Várhelyi's commitment to reinforce import controls.

Among the 144 planned audits, 58 will focus on verifying export controls in third countries, more than double the number carried out in 2025. These cover a range of areas, including pesticide residues in fruit and vegetables from Brazil and Morocco, fishery products from over a dozen countries, and antimicrobial resistance controls in five nations. Within the EU, audits will address topics such as animal disease emergency measures, on-farm animal welfare for broilers, sustainable pesticide use, and food contact materials made from recycled plastics.

Support for EU candidate countries also remains a priority. Twelve audits are planned across Montenegro, Moldova, Albania and Ukraine to assess progress in aligning with EU food safety, veterinary and phytosanitary requirements ahead of accession.
