The European Commission has secured Member State support for the mobilisation of more than €56 million in emergency aid for farmers affected by adverse climatic events and natural disasters. The funding will benefit Portugal, Romania, Cyprus, Croatia, and Slovenia, with national governments able to complement the allocation with up to 200% in additional national support.

The measure is intended to assist farmers who suffered significant losses in sectors including fruit, nuts, vines, olives, arable crops, and mixed livestock production. The damage resulted from drought, heatwaves, storms, flooding, frost, and other extreme events that affected production across the five countries during 2025 and the first half of 2026.

The support will be financed through the agricultural reserve under the Common Agricultural Policy and must be paid to farmers by 28 February 2027 at the latest. The decision reflects the growing impact of climate shocks on European agriculture and reinforces the need for stronger resilience and risk management tools across the sector.
