The latest JRC MARS bulletin shows that persistent heat and a lack of rainfall over the past two months have cut yield expectations for summer crops such as maize and reduced fodder and pasture availability across western and central Europe. The Commission says it is closely monitoring the situation while continuing to support farmers through the Common Agricultural Policy.

According to the bulletin, hot and dry conditions have lowered maize yield expectations in the Benelux countries, Slovenia and Croatia, while reduced pasture growth and biomass accumulation are squeezing fodder supplies across a wider area of western and central Europe. Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Christophe Hansen described the summer as "particularly difficult" for EU farmers, with drought and heat pressuring crops, livestock and farm incomes simultaneously.
The episode is a reminder to the sector that resilience-building, through CAP support for practices such as improved water management, crop rotation and soil carbon retention, needs to keep pace with an increasing frequency of extreme weather events. For Agri-Food stakeholders, it also underlines why adaptation planning and diversified sourcing are becoming as important as short-term relief measures.
