EFSA's annual report on pesticide residues found that of 9,842 samples of commonly consumed foods tested across the EU in 2024, including aubergines, bananas, table grapes and wheat, 98.8% complied with EU maximum residue levels, consistent with 98.7% in 2021 when the same food selection was last analysed. No measurable residues were found in 43.1% of samples, while EFSA's dietary exposure assessment confirmed low risk to consumer health overall.

Beyond the core EU-coordinated monitoring programme, member states analysed a further 86,449 samples under national control programmes, an 18% decrease from 2023, with a 1.8% non-compliance rate, while a separate increased import control programme covering 39,433 samples, up 39% from 2023, showed a higher 3.6% non-compliance rate. For the first time, this year's report distinguishes import-control findings from the standard monitoring data.
The report flags specific issues for risk managers, including recommendations to improve traceability of virgin and extra virgin olive oil origin, where unknown country-of-origin rates ran highest among tested commodities, and to expand monitoring of TFA (trifluoroacetic acid) residues following a Commission request for an EU-wide proficiency test of official laboratories.
