The report, “R&I for Alternative Protein Sources towards Strategic Autonomy and Sustainability in EU Protein Production”, provides a comprehensive overview of current trends and future research needs in the field of alternative proteins. It explores the potential of insects, algae, microbial fermentation and protein-rich crops as part of a broader strategy to reduce Europe’s dependency on imported protein feed, strengthen food system resilience and support environmental sustainability.

The publication also identifies major barriers that need to be addressed, including scaling up innovative technologies, improving regulatory clarity, building transparent value chains and increasing consumer acceptance. It underlines that both fundamental research and applied innovation will be essential to ensure that alternative protein systems are not only scalable, but also nutritionally sound, economically viable and aligned with EU priorities.
