The ThreeT project, funded by Interreg Europe, highlighted the alpannonia project—a cross-border initiative between Austria and Hungary—as a good practice in a post dated 9 September 2020. The project aimed to establish and manage a nature and panorama trail connecting the Alps to the Hungarian Plain. This involved developing a long-distance route and creating a coordinated tourism offer along the path.

A total budget of EUR 2,238,101 was allocated to define and signpost the 150 km main route and its side trails, establish hiking gates and rest areas, deliver tour guide training, and implement marketing and publicity campaigns, among other activities.

As nature-based tourism—particularly hiking—continues to grow in popularity, this initiative offers valuable insights for other border regions seeking to promote tourism based on shared cultural and natural heritage.
