The European Commission's Green Forum highlights the Aware Worksite concept, developed by Finland's Foundation for Student Housing in the Helsinki Region (HOAS), to promote social responsibility in construction. This initiative aims to ensure fair and safe working conditions across all HOAS construction sites.

Key features:

  • Universal standards: the concept mandates seven core principles, including safety, respect, and mental well-being, applicable to all workers, regardless of employer.

  •

  • Regular surveys: anonymous, multilingual surveys are conducted quarterly via QR codes, allowing workers to voice concerns and experiences.

  •

  • Transparent reporting: survey results are shared with all stakeholders, fostering an open dialogue and prompt action on identified issues.

  •

  • Contractual integration: HOAS incorporates the Aware Worksite principles into procurement contracts, ensuring compliance and accountability.

  •

Since its pilot in late 2024, the concept has been implemented across 10 sites and extended to maintenance contracts. It has received positive feedback for its simplicity and effectiveness in enhancing worker well-being and operational transparency.

HOAS offers guidance and materials to encourage other organisations to adopt the model, aiming to foster a culture of responsibility and fairness in the construction sector.
