The European Builders Confederation (EBC) unveiled the study “EU micro construction companies: Rising to the 2040 climate objectives”.

The study underscores that micro construction companies — representing 94% of all EU construction firms and 46% of the workforce — are essential to Europe’s energy transition. Despite their prevalence, these companies currently generate only 31% of sectoral added value, signalling untapped potential to drive energy renovation and sustainability.

With nearly 75% of Europe’s building stock still energy-inefficient and an annual renovation rate of just 1%, the report stresses the need to scale up to 3–4% per year to meet 2050 climate goals — equivalent to around 23,000 homes per day.

According to the study, the key drivers shaping the future of the renovation market are:

  • The growing demand for deep energy renovations;

  • Expansion of one-stop-shops to support market growth;

  • Deployment of clean HVAC solutions for healthy homes;

  • Adoption of circular and environmentally friendly materials.

The study finds that micro construction firms hold strong advantages — such as skilled expertise, client trust, and local anchoring — but will need to adapt their business models through collaboration, lean processes, and digital solutions to scale their impact.
