The picture shows a scenic Italian coastline with winding roads, lush green hills, hillside villages, and the blue Mediterranean Sea.

The European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) has highlighted several EU-funded projects in Italy that help make buildings more sustainable, from zero-emission building design to local heating and cooling planning and the sustainable renovation of existing buildings.

The first project, GreeNest, has received almost €5 million from Horizon Europe. It tests bio-based and circular construction materials, such as coffee-ground insulation, waste wood and lightweight clay, together with renewable energy for zero-emission buildings. One of its demonstration sites is the Delta Info Centre in Porto Viro, in the UNESCO World Heritage landscape of the Po Delta. Further demonstrations in Germany and Greece will support wider replication across Europe.

The second project, Plan4COLD, has received €1.63 million from the LIFE Programme. It helps municipalities in southern Europe develop sustainable local heating and cooling plans, including the Italian cities of Udine, Pordenone, Ragusa, Modica and Vittoria. This matters as cooling demand grows and more than 2.4 million Italian families were in energy poverty in 2024.
