In 2022, the average contribution of the tourism ecosystem to employment in EU destinations was 8.2%, according to the EU Tourism Dashboard. Notably, Greece, Romania, and Poland had lower employment indicators of 4.6%, 5.0%, and 5.1%, respectively, suggesting that tourism plays a less significant role in their economies. In contrast, Portugal, Malta, Spain, and Cyprus exhibited high levels of dependency on tourism, with values of 15.7%, 12.2%, 11.8%, and 11.8%, respectively. These countries are more vulnerable to shocks affecting the tourism industry and should consider this when planning their strategies.
