The Eurostat article from July 2020 highlights that tourism among older adults in the EU-27 increased significantly before the pandemic, with nearly half of those aged 65 and over travelling for personal reasons in 2018, while health concerns were a major reason for non-participation.

According to a Eurostat article on European tourism statistics published in July 2020, the years leading up to the pandemic saw a significant increase in tourism among older adults. In 2018, approximately 49% of the EU-27 population aged 65 and over travelled for personal reasons, while the participation rate for those aged 55-64 was slightly higher at 63%. Domestic destinations were the most popular among both the general adult population and older individuals. Additionally, nearly half of those aged 65 and over who did not travel cited health reasons for their decision.
