On 19 May 2025, the Directorate-General for Migration and Home Affairs announced that the European Parliament and the Council had reached a political agreement on the phased rollout of the Entry/Exit System (EES). This agreement allows Member States to gradually benefit from the system’s features, while giving border authorities, the transport sector, and travellers additional time to adapt to the new procedures.

The Regulation must now be formally adopted by the European Parliament and the Council, and will enter into force three days after its publication in the Official Journal of the EU.
