On 17 June 2025, the European Parliament and the Council reached a provisional agreement to revise the visa suspension mechanism, based on a proposal from the European Commission made in October 2023. The updated framework introduces a faster and more adaptable procedure, lowers thresholds, and adds new criteria for suspending visa-free travel—such as hybrid threats and investor citizenship programmes. These changes aim to strengthen the EU’s ability to respond to geopolitical developments while preserving the benefits of visa-free travel.
