A study published by the European Commission in June 2025 reveals that increasing the EU’s textile-to-textile recycling rate to 10% could lower carbon emissions by 440,000 tonnes annually and save 8.8 billion m³ of water each year. Based on a Monte Carlo life cycle assessment, it concludes that there’s a 92% probability of reduced climate impact and almost 100% certainty for water savings, compared to current practices.
The findings support EU textile regulations mandating separate collection from 2025, and recommendations include enhancing recycling processes, improving energy efficiency, and replacing virgin fibres. The study also highlights the importance of aligning efforts with the EU’s energy decarbonisation goals.
