On 28 February 2025, the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) Committee for Aviation Environmental Protection (CAEP) reached a landmark agreement, welcomed by the European Commission. This agreement outlines binding standards to boost aircraft fuel efficiency, effective from 31 December 2031, and to lower noise levels for new aircraft, commencing 1 January 2029. Formal adoption is expected during an upcoming ICAO Council session. This achievement represents a major step towards aligning the aviation sector with long-term climate objectives while benefiting communities around airports.
