In response to EU directives mandating the use of biometric data alongside the Visa Information System (VIS) for border checks—as outlined in the Schengen Borders Code—the EU launched and funded the eBORDER project, which officially concluded on 31 December 2024. Among its key outcomes was the development of a multimodal biometric device for passenger verification, aimed at enhancing the efficiency and reliability of border control systems while improving passenger comfort and mobility during checks.
