As the world faces extraordinary challenges – from climate change to food insecurity – delivering on our purpose is more critical than ever before. Our commitment to protect the planet is multifold, addressing priorities such as climate change, water, land use, farmer livelihoods, and more. Cargill supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Working to nourish the world, protect the planet and empower communities, we know business plays an important role in advancing the Global Goals.
Commitments by aspirational objectives:
Aspirational objective 3: A climate-neutral food chain in Europe by 2050
With the following aspirational target:
Reducing net emissions from own operations, contributing to a 55% GHG emission reduction target in the EU food chain by 2030 (following a science-based approach).
Cargill commitments:
We are committed to reducing our Scope 3 emissions by 30% per ton of product by 2030.
We are committed to supporting the adoption of soil health best practices. Enhancing soil health has many interrelated benefits, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving water quality, increasing drought resilience, enhancing farmer prosperity, and helping to feed a growing global population. Soil is critical in helping slow climate change. As the largest carbon sink on land, soil stores over three times more carbon than forests and other vegetation.
We believe regenerative agriculture practices will benefit the long-term profitability and resiliency of farmers while simultaneously advancing our progress against our science-based climate commitment to reduce GHG emissions in our global supply chain. Cargill is also developing solutions that reduce the greenhouse gas impacts of animal production, and other innovations across our business to advance sustainability.
Aspirational objective 6: Sustainable value creation in the European food supply chain through partnership
With the following aspirational targets:
a) Improved resilience and competitiveness of companies operating at any point along the food value chain by 2030.
b) Continued progress towards sustainable production, contributing to sustainable management and efficient use of natural resources by 2030 and improved animal welfare.
Cargill commitments:
Restoring 600 billion liters of water in priority watersheds.
Reducing 5 million kg of water pollutants in priority watersheds.
Implementing our Water Stewardship program at all priority facilities.
Improving access to safe drinking water in 25 priority watersheds.
Full detail of the pledge in the provided attachment.
