Puratos is dedicated to being a socially responsible company and a reliable partner, not only in innovation but also in sustainability, for all its stakeholders. It was with great interest that Puratos Group participated in the development of the EU Code of Conduct on responsible food business and marketing practices. We do believe that transitioning to a sustainable food system requires a holistic approach and the involvement of all stakeholders, from farm to fork.

Commitments by aspirational objectives:

Aspirational objective 1: Healthy, balanced, and sustainable diets for all European consumers, thereby contributing to: 

1) Reversing malnutrition and diet-related noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) in the EU.

2) Reducing the environmental footprint of food consumption by 2030.

With the following aspirational targets:

a) Improved food consumption patterns in the EU. 

b) A food environment that makes it easier to choose healthy and sustainable diets.

Puratos commitments:

  • Our goal is to provide people with nutritious and convenient food that can help them live healthier lives.

 

Aspirational objective 3: A climate-neutral food chain in Europe by 2050

With the following aspirational target: 

Reducing net emissions from own operations, contributing to a 55% GHG emission reduction target in the EU food chain by 2030 (following a science-based approach).

Puratos commitments:

  • We aim to minimize our impact on climate change. By 2025, our operations will be carbon neutral. We will achieve this by implementing (1) Energy Efficiency Projects; (2) Using renewable energy produced on and off-site and (3) compensating the remaining emissions by planting trees in our cocoa supply chain.

 

Aspirational objective 4: An optimised circular and resource-efficient food chain in Europe

With the following aspirational targets:

a) Improved resource efficiency within own operations, contributing to sustainable, efficient use and management of energy and natural resources in operations by 2030. 

b) Improved sustainability of food and drink packaging, striving for all packaging towards circularity by 2030.

Puratos commitments:

  • Packaging materials to become fully recyclable or reusable by 2025, with a deep focus on helping our customer reduce their environmental footprint.

 

Aspirational objective 6: Sustainable value creation in the European food supply chain through partnership

With the following aspirational targets:

a) Improved resilience and competitiveness of companies operating at any point along the food value chain by 2030.

b) Continued progress towards sustainable production, contributing to sustainable management and efficient use of natural resources by 2030 and improved animal welfare.

Puratos commitments:

  • We seek to minimize our impact on climate change and on natural resources by having a balanced and sustainable water management by reducing our own water consumption, improving the quality of our water discharge and reducing water risks in our external production sites. 

  • By 2025, all chocolate produced and sold by Belcolade will be sustainable (under Beyond Chocolate).

  • By 2025, 100% of the eggs and egg productsused by Puratos Group will come fromalternative breeding to cages, wherever weare present.

 

Aspirational objective 7: Sustainable sourcing in food supply chains

With the following aspirational targets:

a) Transformed commodity supply chains that do not contribute to deforestation, forest degradation, and destruction of natural habitat and which preserve and protect high-value ecosystems and biodiversity.

b) Improved social performance in (global) food supply chains.

Puratos commitments:

  • Continue and increase our support toCacao Trace Farmers, through the Chocolate Bonus, distributed by the Next Generation Cacao Foundation.

  • Help underprivileged children through our Bakery Schools- Continue and increase our network of Bakery Schools, developed by the Bakery School Foundation.

  • Source 100% of its cardboard and wooden packaging from sustainable forestry, complying with FSC® or PEFC® certifications.

  • Keep 100% of our Palm ingredients certified RSPO, using a combination of Segregated, Mass Balance and Book & Claim. As of 2024, all palm oil purchased by the Puratos Group will be RSPO-certified under the supply chain model RSPO Mass Balance, if not Segregated in Europe.

  • 100% of the Fruits used by Puratos will be sourced from suppliers that are compliant with the Puratos Pesticide Policy and that have committed to comply with Puratos’ “Supplier Code of Conduct”.
