FEFANA member companies supply a wide portfolio of feed additives which also provide positive effects on the environmental performance of livestock, enable the efficient valorisation of raw materials and co-products, contribute to animal welfare and minimize feed loss. Although located at the beginning of the food chain, our sector provides added value to the sustainability of livestock production and hence to the food chain at large.
Commitments by aspirational objectives:
Aspirational objective 2: Prevention and reduction of food loss and waste (at the consumer level, within internal operations, and across value chains)
With the following aspirational target:
A 50% reduction of per capita food waste at the retail and consumer level by 2030 and reduced food losses along the food production and supply chains in the EU.
Aspirational objective 3: A climate-neutral food chain in Europe by 2050
With the following aspirational target:
Reducing net emissions from own operations, contributing to a 55% GHG emission reduction target in the EU food chain by 2030 (following a science-based approach).
FEFANA commitments:
FEFANA, together with the International Feed Industry Association (IFIF) and other international associations and companies, has conducted thorough research on the environmental effects of certain feed additives (e.g., reduction of climate-relevant emissions, eutrophication, and acidification potential) via the Specialty Feed Ingredients Sustainability (SFIS) Project. Outcomes of Phase 2 are available, and Phase 3 is close to completion;
FEFANA has joined the Agricultural Modelling Working Group, an expert group of the European Commission providing expertise and collaborating with other stakeholders and experts on the methodologies to model and assess on-farm methane and nitrogenous emissions to enable informed choices on farming practices.
Aspirational objective 4: An optimised circular and resource-efficient food chain in Europe
With the following aspirational targets:
a) Improved resource efficiency within own operations, contributing to sustainable, efficient use and management of energy and natural resources in operations by 2030;
b) Improved sustainability of food and drink packaging, striving for all packaging towards circularity by 2030.
Aspirational objective 6: Sustainable value creation in the European food supply chain through partnership
With the following aspirational targets:
a) Improved resilience and competitiveness of companies operating at any point along the food value chain by 2030;
b) Continued progress towards sustainable production, contributing to sustainable management and efficient use of natural resources by 2030 and improved animal welfare.
FEFANA commitments:
FEFANA has set up a Sustainability Steering Group in early 2021 to explore further possibilities and to steer our sector’s contributions to a more sustainable food chain;
FEFANA has shared knowledge and expertise with the Livestock Environmental Assessment and Performance Partnership (LEAP) under the Food and Agricultural Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) to generate the LEAP Guidelines for assessment of the environmental performance of feed additives in livestock supply chains, aimed at ensuring robust and harmonized life cycle assessments (LCA) of the production and use impacts of feed additives;
FEFANA has published a number of fact sheets on the use of feed additives in the context of sustainable livestock farming, animal welfare and antibiotic resistance, as well as other informational material (e.g., videos), and continues to organise webinars and events to cover these topics, thereby promoting knowledge sharing and best practice within and beyond our sector.
Aspirational objective 7: Sustainable sourcing in food supply chains
With the following aspirational targets:
a) Transformed commodity supply chains that do not contribute to deforestation, forest degradation, and destruction of natural habitat and which preserve and protect high-value ecosystems and biodiversity;
b) Improved social performance in (global) food supply chains.
FEFANA commitments:
FEFANA has been engaging with other food chain stakeholders in the development of guidance for best practice and knowledge-sharing initiatives.
Full detail of the pledge in the provided attachment.
