The NURSECOAST-II project (Model Nutrients Reduction Solutions in Near-Coast Touristic Areas), funded by the Interreg Baltic Sea Region 2021–2027 programme and co-financed by the European Union, addresses the challenge of seasonal wastewater surges in tourist destinations.
Running from January 2023 to December 2025, the project is coordinated by the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) in collaboration with 16 organisations across eight countries in the Baltic Sea Region. It aims to test various methods for managing excess wastewater during peak tourism periods, conduct exploratory studies, develop educational tutorials, and draft policy recommendations tailored to wastewater treatment in tourist areas around the Baltic Sea.
The project’s key target groups include local public authorities, tourism site operators, and wastewater treatment facility managers, with the goal of strengthening their knowledge and capacity for sustainable wastewater management.
