According to a Eurostat article on European tourism statistics for 2021, the accommodation and food services sector has not yet fully recovered from the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, employment in this sector was still 10% lower than pre-pandemic levels in 2019, with approximately 9.9 million people employed. Around 80% of the enterprises and workforce in this sector were in the food and beverages subsector. Greece had the highest employment share in the EU at 19.6% of business economy employment, followed by Cyprus (13.5%), Spain, Malta, Portugal, and Croatia.
